Glutamine

Glutamine is an amino acid with significant health benefits.
It promotes protein synthesis in the body. Glutamine is a natural product found in protein foods such as cereal, grain, meat and fish.

More importantly, it is a fuel for the white blood cells that fight off infections in the body and aids in the healing process.

It is helpful in decreasing cravings for sugar and alcohol. It plays an important role in helping the liver detoxify, especially in processing alcohol. It could be beneficial if you have had a stomach bug, been on antibiotics or drinking too much.

Dr Mauro DiPasquale, probably the leading expert on glutamine is of the opinion that increasing the production of protein (for muscle building) is dependent on the size of the glutamine pool in a muscle cell. If there is enough glutamine in your muscles, growth can take place. If there is a lack of glutamine in your muscles, muscle growth will not take place. This is the reason why it is widely considered as the most important bodybuilding supplement.

It is also considered to be natures 'brain food' by improving mental capacities. It is said to give a lift from fatigue, and is therefore good for people recovering from illness and surgery. It readily passes the blood-brain barrier and is used as a brain fuel in the form of glutamic acid.

To help boost the immune system, you need 2 to 5 grams a day.
